Windows updates keep your laptop secure, but sometimes they get stuck at a percentage or fail with an error code again and again. Before you lose patience, try these fixes in order.
First: is it really stuck?
Large updates can take a long time, especially on older hard drives. If the drive light is flickering or the percentage moves occasionally, give it more time. If nothing changes for several hours, it may be stuck.
9 fixes to try
- Restart the laptop and try again.
- Check free space. Updates need room; free up at least 20GB.
- Run the troubleshooter: Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update.
- Disconnect external devices such as USB drives and docks.
- Pause and resume updates to restart the download.
- Temporarily disable third-party antivirus (keep Windows Security on).
- Run SFC and DISM in an admin Command Prompt:
sfc /scannowDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Reset update components by clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder (stop the Windows Update service first). Follow Microsoft's official guidance.
- Install the update manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog or use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant for feature updates.

Updates and low storage laptops
Laptops with 64GB or 128GB drives often struggle with feature updates. Moving files to cloud or external storage — or upgrading to a larger SSD — fixes this permanently.
When an update breaks something
If Wi-Fi, sound or printing stops after an update, roll back the related driver in Device Manager or uninstall the update temporarily. Check your laptop maker's site for updated drivers.
Never force-shutdown during an update
Unless it has been stuck for many hours, avoid holding the power button mid-update. An interrupted update can lead to boot problems — see automatic repair loops.
