A blue screen error — the "Blue Screen of Death" or BSOD — means Windows hit a problem it could not recover from and restarted to protect your data. One blue screen may be a one-off. Repeated blue screens mean something needs fixing.
Read the stop code
Every blue screen shows a stop code, such as:
- MEMORY_MANAGEMENT — often RAM or driver issues.
- IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL — usually a faulty driver.
- CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED — corrupted system files or failing storage.
- INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE — storage or boot configuration problems.
- VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE — graphics driver or GPU issues.
- WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR — often hardware-related.
Take a photo of the screen so you have the code.
Step-by-step fixes
- Note what changed. A new driver, app, update or hardware?
- Uninstall recent updates or drivers. Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates.
- Update drivers — especially graphics, Wi-Fi and chipset — from the laptop maker.
- Run SFC and DISM in an admin Command Prompt:
sfc /scannowDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Test memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic.
- Check the drive with
chkdsk /scanand your maker's diagnostic tools. - Scan for malware.
- Use System Restore to roll back to a working point if available.

When a BSOD means hardware
- Blue screens continue after a clean installation.
- Memory diagnostic finds errors.
- Drive health checks report problems.
- Blue screens happen when the laptop is hot.
These need hardware diagnosis — RAM, storage, cooling or the motherboard.

Does a blue screen damage my laptop?
The blue screen itself does not, but the underlying cause might — especially failing storage.

Only after checking hardware. Reinstalling will not fix faulty RAM or a failing drive.
Can overheating cause blue screens?
Yes, particularly WHEA errors under load.
