Spilled Water or Tea on Your Laptop Keyboard? Do This Now

What you do in the first few minutes after a spill matters most. Follow these steps — and avoid the hair-dryer and rice myths.

Cup of tea spilled next to an open laptop keyboard

Liquid spills are among the most common — and most urgent — laptop accidents. Water is bad; tea with sugar, coffee with milk and soft drinks are worse because they leave sticky, conductive residue. The first few minutes make a real difference, so here is exactly what to do.

The first 60 seconds

  1. Switch it off immediately. Hold the power button until it turns off. Do not wait to save your work.
  2. Unplug the charger and remove any USB devices.
  3. Turn the laptop upside down in a tent shape (lid open, keyboard facing down) to let liquid drain away from the motherboard.
  4. Wipe visible liquid with a lint-free cloth or tissue.
  5. Remove the battery if your model has an external, removable one.

What NOT to do

  • Do not switch it on to check if it still works — powering a wet board can short-circuit components.
  • Do not use a hair-dryer. Heat can push liquid further inside and warp parts.
  • Do not rely on rice. It does not remove residue and can leave dust and starch inside.
  • Do not shake the laptop — it spreads liquid around.

Why sugary drinks need faster attention

Sugar and milk leave residue that keeps conducting electricity and causes corrosion over days or weeks. Even if the laptop seems to work after drying, corrosion can quietly damage the keyboard circuit and motherboard. A prompt internal clean gives the best chance of avoiding later failure.

What a technician does after a spill

  1. Opens the laptop and disconnects the battery.
  2. Checks where the liquid reached — keyboard, board, connectors.
  3. Cleans affected areas to remove residue and corrosion.
  4. Tests the keyboard, touchpad, ports and power circuit.
  5. Shares findings and an estimate if parts such as the keyboard need replacing.

At FixMyTech in Gurugram, liquid-damaged laptops are inspected before any power is applied wherever possible.

Signs of hidden liquid damage

  • Keys that type randomly or repeat.
  • Touchpad clicks on its own.
  • The laptop shuts down or will not charge.
  • A sour or burnt smell days after the spill.

Frequently asked questions

My laptop works fine after the spill. Do I still need a check?

It is a good idea, especially if the drink had sugar or milk. Corrosion can develop later.

Will my data survive?

Often, yes — storage drives are usually away from the keyboard area. Tick "data must be preserved" when booking.

Is spill damage covered by warranty?

Manufacturer warranties often exclude liquid damage. Check your warranty or accidental damage plan.
