Laptop Touchpad Not Working? 8 Fixes Before You Book a Repair

A frozen or jumpy touchpad is often a setting or a driver. Try these eight fixes first, then see when a repair is needed.

Finger using the touchpad of a laptop

A touchpad that freezes, jumps around or refuses to click is surprisingly common, especially after a Windows update. Before booking a repair, work through these fixes — many touchpad problems are solved in a few minutes.

1. Check the touchpad shortcut key

Many laptops have a function key (often F6, F7 or F9 with a touchpad icon) that disables the touchpad. Press it once — or Fn plus that key.

2. Check Windows settings

Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad and make sure it is turned on. Also check the option "Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected".

Need a technician? If keys are stuck, typing wrong characters, or your touchpad has stopped responding, a FixMyTech technician can check the hardware and drivers and share an estimate before any work. Book a keyboard or touchpad repair online, call 085950 05049 or visit our workshop at Shop No. 71 New, Gwal Pahari, Gurugram.

3. Unplug external mice

Some laptops disable the touchpad automatically when a USB or Bluetooth mouse is connected.

4. Update or roll back the driver

Open Device Manager → Mice and other pointing devices (or Human Interface Devices). Update the touchpad driver from your laptop maker's support site. If problems began after an update, use "Roll back driver".

5. Clean the surface

Grease, lotion or moisture can make the cursor jumpy. Wipe the touchpad with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and dry it.

6. Check BIOS settings

Some laptops have a touchpad option in BIOS. Make sure it is enabled.

7. Look for a swollen battery

This is important. On many laptops the battery sits directly under the touchpad. If the touchpad has become hard to click or is raised, a swollen battery may be pushing it up. Stop using the laptop and get it checked — see our guide to swollen laptop batteries.

8. Check for liquid damage

If the touchpad started misbehaving after a spill, switch off and follow our liquid spill steps.

When it is a hardware problem

If none of the above helps, possible causes include a loose or damaged touchpad cable, a failed touchpad module or a fault on the motherboard connector. A technician checks the connection and module and replaces parts only when necessary.

At FixMyTech in Gurugram we always rule out drivers and settings first, then share the diagnosis and estimate before any repair.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my touchpad click on its own?

Moisture, a faulty module or pressure from a swollen battery can cause phantom clicks. Get it checked if it continues.

Can I just use a mouse?

Yes, temporarily. But if a swollen battery is the cause, continued use is unsafe.

Does touchpad repair affect my files?

No. Your data is not touched.
