A clean laptop looks better, feels nicer to use and runs cooler. Most external cleaning is easy to do yourself with the right tools. Here is a safe, step-by-step guide.
What you need
- Microfibre cloths (two: one dry, one slightly damp).
- Compressed air can or electric air blower.
- Soft brush (a clean makeup or paint brush works).
- Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher), used sparingly.
- Cotton swabs and wooden toothpicks.
Before you start
- Shut down the laptop — do not just put it to sleep.
- Unplug the charger and all devices.
- Work on a clean, well-lit table.
Need a technician? If your laptop is dusty, running warm or has not been serviced in a while, a FixMyTech technician can clean it inside and out, check its health and share any findings before extra work. Clean the screen
- Wipe gently with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust.
- For marks, use a cloth very lightly dampened with water.
- Never spray liquid directly on the screen.
- Avoid paper towels, tissues and household glass cleaners.
Clean the keyboard
- Tilt the laptop and tap gently to loosen crumbs.
- Use short bursts of compressed air between keys.
- Brush around keys with a soft brush.
- Wipe keycaps with a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (wrung out well).
Clean the touchpad and body
- Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then dry.
- Use a cotton swab for edges and seams.
Clean ports and vents
- Use short bursts of compressed air into vents. Hold the can upright.
- Clean ports gently with a wooden toothpick — never metal.
- Do not let the fan spin rapidly from compressed air; hold it still with a toothpick through the vent if accessible.
What not to do
- Do not open the laptop if it is under warranty or you are unsure.
- Do not use a vacuum cleaner on the keyboard or vents.
- Do not use bleach, ammonia or strong solvents.
- Do not pour any liquid onto the laptop.
When to get a professional clean
External cleaning does not reach the dust packed inside the heatsink. If your laptop is running hot, the fan is loud or performance drops under load, an internal clean is needed — see our cleaning and maintenance service in Gurugram.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean my laptop?
Wipe weekly, and do a fuller external clean monthly.
Are screen-cleaning sprays safe?
Use only sprays made for laptop screens, applied to the cloth, not the screen.
Can I wash keycaps?
Only on keyboards designed for removable keycaps. Laptop keycaps are fragile.
