"Plugged in, not charging" is one of the most common laptop messages — and one of the most confusing. The cause could be a worn battery, a charger problem, a loose port or simply a setting. Check 1: Is a charge limit turned on?
Many laptops have battery-care features that stop charging at 60% or 80%. Look in your maker's app — Lenovo Vantage, Dell Power Manager/Dell Optimizer, MyAsus, HP Battery Health Manager in BIOS — and check whether a charge limit is enabled. This is normal behaviour, not a fault.
Check 2: Is the charger working?
- Look for a light on the charger or laptop charging indicator.

Check 4: Reset the battery driver
In Device Manager → Batteries, uninstall "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery", then restart. Windows reinstalls it automatically.
Check 5: Battery health
Run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt. A heavily worn battery may refuse to charge properly.
