A charging port that wobbles, sparks or only works at one angle is one of the most common laptop hardware faults we see. Ignoring it is risky: a loose connection can heat up, damage the charger, or eventually stop the laptop from charging at all. Here is how to tell whether the port is the problem and what a repair involves.
Common signs of a failing charging port
- The charging light flickers when you move the cable.
- The laptop only charges with the plug held at a particular angle.
- The plug feels loose or falls out easily.
- You see scorch marks or smell burning near the port.
- A USB-C laptop charges with one charger but not another.
What causes it?
Everyday strain. Using the laptop on your lap or bed while charging puts sideways pressure on the plug. Over months, the solder joints holding the port to the motherboard can crack.
Drops while plugged in. Tripping over the cable is a classic cause — the force goes straight into the port.
Dust and debris. Lint inside a USB-C port can stop the plug seating fully.
Charger faults. Sometimes the port is fine and the adapter or cable is failing. That is why we test with a known-good charger first.

Quick checks you can do safely
- Try another socket and, if possible, another compatible charger.
- Look inside the port with a torch. If there is lint, switch the laptop off and gently remove it with a wooden toothpick — never metal.
- Inspect the cable for kinks, exposed wire or a bent pin.
- Check battery status in Windows (Settings → System → Power & battery) to see whether it says "plugged in, not charging".
If none of these help, stop forcing the plug and book a check.
How a technician repairs it
Laptops use different designs. Some have a DC jack on a separate cable that can be replaced on its own. Others have the port soldered directly to the motherboard, which needs careful desoldering and re-soldering. USB-C ports are small, and replacing one needs precise work and the correct part for your model.
At FixMyTech we confirm the cause — port, charger, battery or a power fault on the board — and share the diagnosis and estimate before any work begins.
Why charging ports fail so often in Delhi NCR
Power cuts, voltage fluctuations and inverter switching are common across Gurugram, Delhi and Noida. A good surge protector and the original charger reduce stress on the charging circuit. If your area sees frequent fluctuations, avoid charging during switchovers and unplug during storms.
How to protect the new port
- Plug and unplug straight, not at an angle.
- Avoid using the laptop on soft surfaces with the cable bent sharply.
- Route the cable so it cannot be tripped over.
- Use a quality charger with the correct wattage for your laptop.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using the laptop if it charges sometimes?
It is better not to. An intermittent connection can arc and heat up, damaging the board further.
Is it the battery or the port?
If the laptop will not run even when plugged in, the issue is more likely the port, charger or board. If it runs plugged in but the battery percentage does not rise, the battery may be the cause. A diagnosis confirms which.
How long does a port repair take?
It depends on the design and part availability. We share an expected timeline with the estimate.
