Laptop Battery Draining Fast? 10 Fixes for Windows 11

Before replacing the battery, check these ten settings and habits. Many fast-drain problems are caused by software, not hardware.

Fast battery drain is one of the most common laptop complaints — and it is not always the battery's fault. Background apps, display brightness and power settings can halve your runtime. Try these fixes before deciding on a replacement.

1. Check what is using battery

Go to Settings → System → Power & battery → Battery usage. Apps using a lot of power in the background are prime suspects.

2. Use the right power mode

Under Power & battery, set Power mode to "Balanced" or "Best power efficiency" when on battery.

Need a technician? If your battery drains fast, will not charge past a certain level or looks swollen, a FixMyTech technician can test its health and share an estimate before any work. Book a laptop battery check online, call 085950 05049 or visit our workshop at Shop No. 71 New, Gwal Pahari, Gurugram.

3. Turn on Energy Saver

Windows 11's Energy Saver (Battery Saver) reduces background activity. Set it to turn on automatically at 20–30%.

4. Lower screen brightness and refresh rate

The display is usually the biggest power user. Reduce brightness, and if you have a high refresh-rate display, try a lower rate on battery.

5. Stop apps running at startup

Settings → Apps → Startup. Turn off apps you do not need immediately.

6. Manage browser tabs

Many open tabs and extensions keep the CPU busy. Use your browser's efficiency or sleeping-tabs feature.

7. Turn off what you are not using

Bluetooth, keyboard backlight and connected USB devices all draw power.

8. Update Windows, drivers and BIOS

Power-management fixes often arrive in updates. Get chipset and BIOS updates from your laptop maker.

9. Scan for malware

Hidden cryptominers and adware can keep the CPU busy and drain the battery. See our guide to signs of malware on a laptop.

10. Generate a battery report

Run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt. If Full charge capacity is much lower than Design capacity, the battery itself has worn and replacement is the real fix — see our guide to battery replacement in Gurugram.

Signs it is not software

  • The drain continues in BIOS or with everything closed.
  • The laptop shuts down above 20%.
  • The battery is several years old with heavy use.
  • The laptop runs hot even when idle — the cooling system may need attention.

Frequently asked questions

Does keeping the laptop plugged in damage the battery?

Constant 100% charge plus heat speeds up wear. Use your maker's battery-care or charge-limit setting if available.

Why did battery life drop after an update?

Updates can reset settings or run background indexing for a few days. If it continues, check battery usage by app.

Is fast charging bad for the battery?

Manufacturers design for it, but heat is the main enemy. Keep the laptop cool while charging.
