Coloured or white lines across a laptop screen are one of the most searched display problems — and one of the most misunderstood. The line might be caused by a damaged panel, a loose display cable, a graphics fault or even a driver update. Before you assume the screen needs replacing, work through the likely causes.
1. Physical pressure or a drop
A single sharp line that appeared after a drop, or after the laptop was squeezed in a bag, usually points to damage inside the panel. Lines from pressure damage do not move or change when you adjust the lid.
2. A loose or damaged display cable
The display cable runs through the hinge and flexes every time you open the lid. If the lines flicker, appear or disappear when you move the screen, the cable or its connector is a strong suspect. This is often a smaller repair than a full panel.
Need a technician? If your laptop screen is cracked, flickering, showing lines or staying black, a FixMyTech technician can confirm whether it is the panel, cable or graphics — and share an estimate first. Book a laptop screen repair online, call 085950 05049 or visit our workshop at Shop No. 71 New, Gwal Pahari, Gurugram.
3. Graphics chip or driver problems
If lines appear on an external monitor too, the problem sits before the screen — in the graphics hardware or driver.
Try this: update or roll back the graphics driver from Device Manager, or restart in Safe Mode. If the lines vanish in Safe Mode, a driver is likely to blame.
4. Heat-related faults
Lines that appear only after the laptop has been running for a while, especially during games or video calls, can be linked to overheating graphics hardware. Dust-clogged cooling makes this worse — see our guide to overheating and fan repair.
5. Liquid damage
A spill on the keyboard can seep towards the display connector or the motherboard. Lines plus other strange behaviour after a spill need a prompt inspection.
6. Panel ageing
Some panels develop column faults over time without any impact. These are panel faults and need a replacement.
Quick diagnosis checklist
- Do the lines appear in the BIOS/startup screen? If yes, it is not Windows.
- Do they show on an external monitor? If yes, think graphics.
- Do they change when you move the lid? If yes, think cable.
- Do they appear only when hot? Think cooling and graphics.
Note your answers when you book a repair — it helps the technician.
When to get it checked
Lines rarely fix themselves. If they are spreading, flickering or followed by a black screen, back up your files and get the laptop inspected. At our Gurugram workshop we test the panel, cable and graphics output before recommending a repair, so you only pay for what is actually needed.
Frequently asked questions
Can a software update cause screen lines?
Occasionally, a graphics driver update can cause display artefacts. Rolling back the driver is a safe first step.
Is it safe to keep using the laptop?
Usually yes for a short time, but back up your data. If the lines came with a burning smell or after a spill, switch it off.
Can only the cable be replaced?
Yes, if the cable is the cause and a compatible part is available for your model.
Why book a FixMyTech technician?
