Wi-Fi that keeps dropping is a productivity killer, especially for video calls and work-from-home. The cause might be the router, Windows settings, a driver or the laptop's Wi-Fi hardware. Here is how to narrow it down.
Step 1: Is it the laptop or the network?
- Do other devices (phones, TVs) also drop?
- Does the laptop work fine on a mobile hotspot?
If every device drops, the router or internet connection is the issue. If only the laptop drops, continue.
Step 2: Restart and forget the network
- Restart the laptop and router.
- In Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks, Forget your network and reconnect.
Need a technician? Step 3: Update or roll back the Wi-Fi driver
Device Manager → Network adapters → your Wi-Fi adapter. Update the driver from your laptop maker's site. If problems started after an update, roll back.
Step 4: Turn off power saving for Wi-Fi
In Device Manager → Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Power Management, untick "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
Step 5: Reset network settings
Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset. This reinstalls network adapters (you will need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords).
Step 6: Check the band
If your router supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz, try connecting to the other band. 5GHz is faster at short range; 2.4GHz reaches further through walls.
Signs of a hardware problem
- Wi-Fi adapter missing from Device Manager.
- Very weak signal even next to the router.
- Wi-Fi stopped after a screen or hinge repair (antenna cables run through the display).
- Drops when the laptop is moved or the lid is adjusted.
These may point to a failing Wi-Fi card or damaged antenna cable.
