CCTV Camera Not Showing Video? Troubleshooting "No Video" Errors

"No video" on a CCTV channel usually comes down to power, cable or connector problems. Here is how to find which.

CCTV monitor showing no video on one channel

A "No video" message or a black tile on your CCTV monitor means the recorder is not receiving a signal from that camera. The cause is usually power, cabling or a connector — but it can also be the camera itself or a settings issue. Here is how to narrow it down.

Step 1: Is it one camera or all of them?

  • All cameras down: check the recorder (DVR/NVR) and the main power supply.
  • One camera down: focus on that camera's power, cable and connectors.

Step 2: Check power

  • Is the camera's infrared light glowing red at night? If not, it may not have power.
  • Check the power adapter or central power supply box.
  • For PoE cameras, check the PoE switch or NVR port lights.
  • After storms or power surges, power supplies are often the first to fail.

Step 3: Check connectors and cables

  • BNC connectors on analogue systems can loosen or corrode, especially outdoors during monsoon.
  • Network cables on IP systems can be damaged by rodents, weather or construction.
  • Look for cuts, bends and water entry at joints.

Step 4: Swap test

If you are comfortable, swap the faulty camera's cable to a working channel on the recorder. If the camera works on another channel, the recorder channel may be faulty. If not, the camera or cable is the issue.

Step 5: Check recorder settings

  • Make sure the channel is enabled.
  • For IP cameras, check the camera is added with the correct IP and password.
  • Check for recorder firmware updates.

Step 6: Check the camera itself

Cameras can fail due to age, water entry, lightning or power surges. Condensation inside the lens housing is a sign of water damage.

Safety first

Do not climb ladders on wet days or work near mains wiring. If the camera is high up or the fault is in the wiring, call a technician.
