A laptop that will not switch on is stressful, especially when your work is on it. But "not turning on" can mean very different things — no lights at all, lights but no display, or a laptop that starts and immediately switches off. At our Gwal Pahari workshop in Gurugram, many of these turn out to be simpler than they first appear. Work through these steps in order.
Step 1: Identify what "not turning on" looks like
- Completely dead: no lights, no fan, no sound.
- Power light on, black screen: the laptop may be running but not displaying.
- Starts then switches off: often power, heat or battery related.
- Beeps or flashing lights: many brands use these as error codes.
Note which one you see — it guides everything that follows.
Step 2: Do a power reset
- Unplug the charger and any USB devices.
- If the battery is removable, take it out.
- Hold the power button for 30–60 seconds to drain residual power.
- Reconnect only the charger (and battery) and try again.
Some laptops have a tiny reset pinhole on the bottom — check your manual.
Need a technician? If your laptop will not turn on, will not charge or switches off without warning, a FixMyTech technician can test the charger, port, battery and power circuit and share an estimate first. Book a charging and power check online, call 085950 05049 or visit our workshop at Shop No. 71 New, Gwal Pahari, Gurugram.
Step 3: Check the charger and socket
- Try a different wall socket.
- Look for a light on the charger brick or the laptop's charging LED.
- Inspect the cable and plug for damage.
- Try a known-good compatible charger if you have one.
Step 4: Test the display
If you hear the fan or see lights but the screen is black:
- Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver.
- Increase brightness using the function keys.
- Connect an external monitor via HDMI. If the image appears there, the issue is the laptop screen or cable — see screen and display repair.
Step 5: Listen and look for clues
- Repeated beeps or blinking caps-lock/power LEDs often indicate memory, CPU or board errors. Search your model's manual for the code.
- A burning smell — stop and unplug immediately.
Step 6: Think about what happened before
- A power cut or voltage surge?
- A spill?
- A drop?
- A BIOS or Windows update that was interrupted?
These clues help a technician narrow down the cause quickly.
When to book a technician
If none of these steps help, the cause could be a faulty charging port, a dead battery, a failed component on the motherboard or a power-circuit fault. At FixMyTech we test each part of the power path step by step, share the diagnosis and estimate, and repair only after your approval.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my data if the laptop is dead?
Not necessarily. The storage drive is often fine even when the laptop will not start. Mention it when you book.
Can a power surge kill a laptop?
It can damage the charger, port or power circuit. A surge protector helps prevent this.
Is it the battery or the motherboard?
A diagnosis is needed to tell. Many "dead" laptops have a simpler cause.
